Classic Cars Get a Green Light: Cortese’s “Jay Leno’s Law” Advances in California Legislature
SACRAMENTO, CA — Senator Dave Cortese (D-San Jose) today announced that SB 1392, “Jay Leno’s Law,” has cleared the California Assembly Appropriations Committee, marking a major step forward for legislation protecting California’s automotive heritage.
The bill would provide smog-check exemptions for qualifying vehicles manufactured between 1976 and 1985 that are carefully maintained and primarily operated for parades, car shows, exhibitions, and charitable events.
“This is a great day for California’s car enthusiasts and for everyone who believes our history is worth preserving,” said Senator Dave Cortese. “I’m proud to see Jay Leno’s Law clear the Assembly Appropriations suspense file and move one step closer to becoming law. California has a legendary automotive heritage, and we should be able to celebrate and preserve these classic vehicles while continuing to protect our environment.”
The legislation is narrowly tailored to a small number of historically significant vehicles that are not used as everyday transportation. Because these vehicles are driven only occasionally for special events and are carefully maintained by their owners, SB 1392 preserves California’s automotive traditions without creating a meaningful new source of everyday vehicle emissions.
