Volkswagen was set up in 1937 by the German Labor Front (Deutsche Arbeitsfront) in Berlin. This month on July 29, 1909, General Motors (GM) bought Cadillac – the top-selling product of American luxury automobiles for $ 4.5 million in GM stock. Cadillac's history began with the failure of Henry Ford's second attempt to start a car company. When former Ford investors turned to Henry Leland, an engineer, and mechanic in Detroit, to evaluate their facilities and equipment, he persuaded these people to continue their plans to start an auto company. His idea was to use his own engine design and the investor plans, for what was supposed to be Henry Ford's first car to build Cadillac's first automobile.

Leland called the auto-venture which he founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1701 Cadillac, in honor of French Explorer Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, Sieur de Cadillac. On October 17, 1902, the first Cadillac's – two-seat Runabout and Tonneau horseless carriages left the factory. These automobiles combined the Ford-designed body and chassis with the Leland-designed 10-horsepower single-cylinder engine. These cars are almost identical to the 1903 Ford Model A. Leland introduced the first Cadillac car models at the 1903 New York Auto Show in January of the following year and immediately received more than 2,000 orders.

Leland ensured that Cadillacs were known for the precision manufacturing and outstanding reliability, something the company has shown to date. His leadership skills enabled him to gain full control of the company in 1904 after they were able to build 2,500 impressive cars in the first year of production.
In 1908, William C. Durant bought Buick and Oldsmobile and founded General Motors as a holding company. In July 1909, he persuaded Leland to sell Cadillac and promised to keep Leland and Leland's son in top leadership positions. The transaction was completed and Cadillac was thriving. Just three years later, Cadillac launched the world's first successful electric car starter for automobiles. In 1915, they were the first company to put V8 engines in every production car for a model year.

During World War I, Leland left GM after a dispute with Durant over producing war materials. Leland later founded Lincoln Motor Company to produce aircraft engines for Allied planes. After the war, he reorganized the company to manufacture luxury cars. In 1922, Lincoln was put up for sale the only offer came from Henry Ford, who bought a company with a market value of nearly $ 16 million for $ 5 million. It's almost certain the low price is out of malice because Ford knows how Leland created Cadillac. The judge was unwilling to accept the low bid and Ford raised the offer to $ 8 million, which was later accepted. In June 1922, Henry Leland and his son Wilfred had to leave the company they founded.

LUGANO, TESSIN, SWITZERLAND, July 28, 2021 / — Opec and their allies have reached a deal to increase oil production by 400,000 barrels a day in response to Brent climbing to over $75, a level not seen since prior to the pandemic. The rise in output is due to commence in August 2021, lasting until December 2022. This much earlier than the original plan for expansion which had been planned to kickstart in April 2022. The conclusion of the meeting between OPEC+ members was long-delayed and sheds light on what had been, up to now, a general pessimistic feeling over demand levels amongst oil producing countries following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Opec+ coalition’s decision is unlikely to be put in place sooner than August as previous disagreement with the UAE had hindered the group’s output policy. An initial meeting had been scheduled on 5th July. In an interview conducted by CNBC, Saudi Arabia’s oil minister Adulaziz bin Salman expressed his unawareness of any negotiations that would result in Abu Dhabi’s consent to the proposal to boost production by 400,000 b/d each month over August 2021 – December 2022, with an option for a stoppage period of three months. The UAE demanded an upward adjustment of their production baseline from 3.168mn b/d to 3.65mn b/d. This standstill was closely followed by major players in the oil industry, energy majors and traders alike, including Vitol, Petraco, Trafigura and Glencore.

Saudi Arabia’s oil minister emphasized that the group will still retain its existing deal until next April, despite the current standstill over its extension until the end of 2022. Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman added also that continued unpredictability in oil markets due to transmission of the Covid-19 pandemic and a possible return of Venezuelan and Iranian barrels actually supported a deal extension and the limitation in output increase.

During the meeting’s discussion, the extension proposal had amassed almost unanimous support.

Minister bin Salman stated that "It really address[es] everyone's concerns: ensuring the market will not be short of volumes, carefully bringing that volume in a gradual phase-in, [and continuing] the mechanism of posing or even increasing or decreasing, which is very assuring for the market."

Nevertheless, he formally opposed the UAE’s request for a baseline revision, claiming that "you cannot pick a month and say, this is my capacity, so you have to give it to me now. This is not the way to do it,". For that matter, he insisted that the disagreements had nevertheless not escalated to the point of risking a deal dissolution.

However, due to current course of events, members of the Opec+ group, including Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates will be granted increased output baselines. These output baselines constitute the benchmarks from which production deals are calculated.
Under the agreement, production baselines will increase as follows:

• For UAE from 3.168mn b/d to 3.5m b/d;
• For Saudi Arabia from 11m b/d to 11.5m b/d;
• For Russia from 11m b/d to 11.5m b/d;
• For Iraq from 4.65m b/d to 4.8m b/d;
• For Kuwait from 2.85m b/d to 3m b/d.

Russia is considered to be the greatest winner. The deal, welcomed by Russia, allows it to boost oil output by 100,000 barrels a day starting from August. Russia’s pre-crisis level will be reached in May next year. Russian companies are believed to monetize their reserves and thus sustain their market share. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak expressed his hopes for budget benefits the agreement should yield, saying “With an average price of $60 per barrel, budget revenues will amount to more than 400 billion rubles ($5 billion), and this is certainly a very positive moment,”.

The next Opec+ meeting, due to be held on 1st September, will be closely monitored by industry players. A spokesperson for the Petraco Group indicated the trading house is looking forward to this chain of events with a prospect for favourable oil market impact in the latter part of 2021.

DALLAS, TEXAS, UNITED STATES, July 28, 2021 / — Ford Motor Company has issued a worldwide recall on approximately 775,000 2013-2017 Ford Explorer vehicles due to issues with steering that have been linked to at least six injuries in North America. While the recall is worldwide, 676,152 vehicles under the recall are registered in North America, with 59,935 in China, and 38,600 elsewhere throughout the world. Ford has shared that the reference number for the recall is 21S32.

Last Friday, the automotive giant announced a recall on its Ford Explorer SUVs because of a steering issue in which vehicles may experience a seized cross-axis ball joint. This seizure has the potential to lead to a fractured rear suspension toe link which ultimately can lead to a loss of steering control, thus increasing the risk of a crash.

Ford has not released details regarding the six injuries thus far related to the defect. Product liability attorney T Nguyen of the Dallas-based Turley Law Firm explains the elements of a product liability claim and what an injured plaintiff has to prove to recover compensation from a product manufacturer. “An injury victim must prove that the product defect was a producing cause of the injury,” says Nguyen, “and there was a technologically and economically feasible safer alternative design that would have prevented or significantly reduced the risk of the plaintiff’s injury without substantially impairing the product’s utility.”

Products liability cases often proceed under the legal theory of “strict liability,” says Nguyen, as opposed to the “negligence” standard used in other auto accident personal injury cases where a defective auto part is not at issue.

According to Ford, affected vehicles may have a “clunk noise” and might have unusual handling when driving as well as a misaligned rear wheel.

The automaker plans to begin sending out owner notifications at the end of August. After the notifications are sent out, owners can expect Ford dealers to inspect the cross-axis ball joint. If necessary, they will replace it. Dealers will also replace the toe links with newer, revised toe link parts.

Dealerships can themselves be held liable for selling defective vehicles that cause injuries, although dealer liability is less common. Attorney Nguyen explains, “Typically, car dealers are not liable for a product defect unless the manufacturer cannot be reached within a jurisdiction of the United States or circumstances show the dealer had control over the design or assembly.” Nguyen continues, “For automotive defects, the manufacturer of the vehicle and the manufacturer or manufacturers of the component part or parts, if any, are typically sued for the automotive defect.”

This recall is the latest in a string of recalls issued by the automaker over the past year. Last Friday, Ford also issued two small-scale recalls in North America.

The first recall relates to roughly 35,000 2020-2021 Ford F-350 Super Duty vehicles with 6.7-liter engines. The vehicles, which were made in a Kentucky truck plant, may have a rear axle housing spring seat interface that might not have been properly welded. Ford explained in a statement that “Affected vehicles may experience rear driveline disconnection. Customers may experience vibration and/or shaking while driving at highway speeds, and/or shuddering upon acceleration.”

Though there have not been any incidents reported with this issue, there is a potential that drivers could experience a sudden loss of power when driving because the driveline may fail while in motion. Additionally, the issue could cause the truck’s parking brake to be released which would allow the vehicle to roll. Both pose a risk of an accident occurring.

The second recall pertains to 41,000 2020-2021 Lincoln Aviator vehicles that have a 3.0-liter gas engine. In cars affected by this recall, the battery cable wire harness might not have been properly secured. Affected vehicles have the potential to face a short circuit which could lead to a potential fire. Ford has also shared that there have been no accidents, injuries, or fires related to this recall.

ORLANDO, FLORIDA, USA, July 28, 2021 / — NovoaGlobal, Inc. a leading provider of advanced traffic safety enforcement technology, announces speed limits are now reduced in Chattanooga, Tennessee including on the portion of Hixson Pike that includes the S curve. The Hixson Pike S curve is historically a very dangerous portion of the road. From 2000 to 2006, six people lost their lives at the S curves on the stretch of road between 2600 – 3400 Hixson Pike. In the following years, after the first camera’s installation in 2007, there have been no traffic deaths reported at this location. On other sections of Hixson Pike, 12 people have lost their lives between 2013 and July 26, 2021.

The sign speed limit was lowered to 35 mph from 40 mph back in March this year. Drivers have been given a grace period to change driving habits and the road signage updated, notifying drivers of the new 35 mph speed limit. Starting August 1st, automated enforcement speed will be adjusted according to the new sign speed.

Chattanooga’s decision may have been influenced by local factors such as an increase in speeding, environmental factors, proximity to residential area, resident and business owner input but anti-speeding and speed reduction programs are gaining national attention. National organizations such as the Governors Highway Safety Association, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Road Safety Foundation are working to institute an anti-speeding pilot program which represents a multi-state, multi-organization effort.

Despite fewer vehicles on the road during the COVID-19 pandemic, traffic crash fatalities are estimated to have reached a 13-year high in 2020.

Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford, and the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) are extending their 18-year commitment to improving teen driving skills by awarding grants totaling $135,000 to six State Highway Safety Offices (SHSO) and announcing the return of Ford Driving Skills for Life hands-on driver training clinics.

Vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death for teen drivers and data from GHSA and Ford Fund’s Teens & Speeding: Breaking the Deadly Cycle report released earlier this year found that more than 2,000 teen vehicle occupant deaths occur each year. When looking at data from fatal motor vehicle crashes between 2015 and 2019, 43% of teen driver and passenger fatalities involved speeding. By comparison, 30% of fatalities involving drivers and passengers ages 20+ were speeding-related.

Additionally, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System, traffic deaths are estimated to have reached a 13-year high in 2020, despite a decline in driving during the COVID-19 pandemic. A NHTSA report estimates that 38,680 people were killed on U.S roadways in 2020 – the highest number since 2007 and an increase of 7.2% from 2019.

SHSOs in Kentucky, Michigan, Montana, New York, Tennessee and Utah are receiving grants ranging from $18,000 to $25,000 to create and implement programs to help combat teen speeding.

“Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, and speeding is often a significant factor,” said Jonathan Adkins, GHSA Executor Director. “We must remain steadfast in our commitment to combat traffic fatalities and equip teens with the skills they need to be safe drivers.”

Ford Fund and GHSA also are resuming their award-winning teen driver safety program – Ford Driving Skills for Life – following a 15-month pause in hands-on training due to COVID-19.

An eight-city tour of free, safe-driving clinics kicks off Aug. 7-8, 2021, in Anaheim, California, with additional stops planned in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Nashville, Phoenix, Sacramento and San Diego through the remainder of this year. Newly licensed drivers or teens who hold a valid learner’s permit can participate. One parent or guardian is encouraged to participate with their teen(s), given the significant role they play in shaping their child’s driving habits. Now in its 18th year, Ford Driving Skills for Life pairs newly licensed drivers with professional driving instructors for next-level instruction. The program addresses issues and critical factors that influence crashes, including: vehicle handling; hazard recognition; speed and space management; distracted and impaired driving. The hands-on training clinics focus on necessary skills for safe driving beyond what is learned in traditional driver education courses.
